Lahore (Crics Point) – The question of who will be the next captain of the Pakistan team has gained attention after Test batsman Babar Azam resigned from the captaincy of the national white-ball team. This sudden move has sparked numerous rumors, and names continue to circulate as potential candidates for leadership.
According to reports from private TV sources, both wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan and fast bowler Shaheen Afridi have been mentioned, but their chances of taking over the captaincy appear slim. In fact, earlier this year, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) not only removed Shaheen Afridi from captaincy duties ahead of the T20 World Cup in America and the West Indies but also replaced wicketkeeper Rizwan as the vice-captain of the Test team, appointing Saud Shakeel as a deputy alongside Shan Masood.
After Pakistan's early exit in the ICC T20 World Cup, rumors spread about three distinct groups within the team. The PCB is reportedly looking for a leader who is free of controversy, which has led to speculation over the next captain. Despite these discussions, the news suggests that Shaheen Afridi’s captaincy role may not be solidified at this point.
It’s worth noting that Babar Azam resigned from the captaincy of all three formats in November following Pakistan's defeat in last year’s World Cup. Afterward, the PCB appointed Shaheen Afridi as the T20 captain and Shan Masood as the Test captain. However, no decision was made regarding the One Day International (ODI) captaincy.
In March this year, Babar Azam was reappointed as Pakistan's white-ball cricket captain, but now, with his second resignation, the future of Pakistan's leadership remains uncertain, with Shaheen Afridi captaincy news being a major topic of discussion.
